After downloading the DFT software using Safari on my Macintosh system, why do I get an error when trying to run the installer?

It seems Safari mistakenly downloads the installer file as a .dmg.bz2 file, rather than just a .dmg file. This means that when you try to open it, the contents get hashed up by the unpacking process. If you simply rename a Safari download so that it ends in .dmg before opening, it solves the problem.
